Submissions Status and Guidelines

Periapt Press looks for fantasy stories across all subgenres. Different anthologies will focus on different aspects of fantasy, but can include high fantasy, low fantasy, urban fantasy, and science fantasy.

We also look for stories that build upon and expand our ideas of the fantastic. Stories that center characters less often seen. Stories both with and without romance. Stories both with and without a little spice. Stories that are more hopepunk than grimdark. Stories that aren’t afraid to bend expectations a little.

Guidelines for all anthology submissions:

  1. Periapt Press pays a flat rate of $25 per story at this time, and provides an author copy (to be shipped no later than 30 days after publication).
  2. Anthology shorts should be between 9,000 to 12,000 words. There is some leeway with the minimum word count, but the maximum is absolute. Each anthology will feature 8-12 authors.
  3. All submissions must be sent to periaptpressinfo [at] gmail [dot] com. The email should contain the story as an attachment, with a short cover letter in the body of the email. The subject of the email should be: Submission for (Name of Collection), (Title by Author).
  4. Please submit your manuscript in a standard manuscript format – 12pt Times New Roman, double spaced lines, and your name and your story’s name on the first page, along with your email address – and attached in .RTF or .DOCX formats. Please feel free to include your pronouns (optional). Note, you do not need to add your mailing address or legal name to your manuscript. We will only ask for that information if your story is chosen for publication. Your file name should include your name, the title of the work, and the collection you’re submitting to.
  5. Your cover letter should contain the length of your story and information that might be relevant to that specific submission. You should also include a short biography, written in third person.
  6. By submitting, you acknowledge that your story has not been created through the use of generative AI at any point. If we subsequently discover the story was created through the use of AI, we reserve the right to refuse to publish, or to unpublish, the story.
  7. Please do not send multiple submissions at once.
  8. We try to respond to all submissions in 30 days. Please feel free to query periaptpressinfo [at] gmail [dot] com if we’ve had your submission for over 45 days.

Guidelines for the Rites of Spring:

  1. The submission window is November 1 – December 15, 2024 (for publication in March).
  2. The setting must be in a secondary world. While all submissions to Periapt Press should be some form of fantasy, for this volume we are looking for a more traditional fantasy setting.
  3. The theme for this anthology is spring rituals – whether in the woods, at an altar, or in the home. We look forward to seeing your interpretation.
  4. We ask that you aim for no more than an R rating. Sex scenes are acceptable but should be more romance than erotica. No rape, gore, incest, or child abuse.

Guidelines for Bedtime Stories (A Charming Fetish collection):

  1. The submission window is February 1 – March 15, 2025 (for publication in June).
  2. The setting must be in a fantastical modern environment. It should be clear that this is still a fantasy setting, and not just a supernatural/paranormal setting.
  3. The theme for this anthology is fairy tale interpretations. You need to be able to site the fairy tale that inspired the story, and it should be clear in the reading. While we don’t support the softening of fairy tales as a whole, for this collection the ending should be HEA or HFN.
  4. Open Door Euphemistic and Open Door Descriptive scenes are acceptable. No rape, gore, incest, or child abuse.
